Need another reason to love Twitter?

The social media giant known for the 140 character post just released details about their latest service. This one is going to be a benefit to musicians everywhere.

The new application allows users to to play and share songs from services such as ITunes, Rdio and Spotify.

The recording industry has seen hard times in recent years. For local and independent bands, the internet has held the potential to connect with audiences that might otherwise be out of reach. A dedicated and smart social marketing plan has the potential to take a hard-working and gifted band to the next level at a faster pace than ever before.

But Twitter is now offering a FREE service that will enhance smart social marketing efforts.  Those quick on the draw will swiftly come up with creative ways to bring their music to the masses.

In a recent press release, Twitter states the app “uses Twitter activity, including Tweets and engagement, to detect and surface the most popular tracks and emerging artists. It also brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity front and center: go to their profiles to see which music artists they follow and listen to songs by those artists. And, of course, you can tweet songs right from the app”.

This is a game-changer and you can be sure New Driven will be exploiting it for the benefit of all New Driven bands.


The new service is called #Music and is available now for Iphone users in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.  Although Android users will have to wait a bit for the app, you can use the web version now.

Twitter 101 – The Video You’ve Been Waiting For

Because Twitter is vital to any band’s successful marketing campaign and because I often receive email from bands seeking airplay who aren’t utilizing Twitter, I thought I’d create a simple little video to help you get over the hump in the Twitter Learning Curve.

When executed properly, a social media marketing plan that has prominent Twitter positioning will add plenty of positive results for any band.

Make an effort to reach out to folks and get to know them. Twitter is the perfect platform because it combines the social aspect with an arena that is interested in business and what’s happening in the world.

Check out this basic, Twitter 101 video if you’re new to Twitter and then practice, practice, practice…just like you do with your music.



How To Leverage The Power of the Tribe

It’s the same old story that’s been repeated for decades upon decades. Bands work diligently to grow a fan base and get their music out there, but it’s a painstaking process. Social media seemed – and often is – the bright spot on the horizon, but it takes executing an effective marketing plan and lots of work.


The power of the collective has always held promise but finding an effective way to carry out such a project can be difficult. I am hoping that is about to change.

In my recent blog post: Stop Promoting Yourself, I wrote about how important it is that bands not fall into the rut of using social media as a one-way street, posting only about themselves. No one enjoys seeing posts that only announce the next gig. There is great benefit to bands who take the time to post, (often), about others. Why is this? People like selflessness. They respect those who put others before themselves. You benefit not only in appreciation from those you share information about but also in the way you audience perceives you.

Your time is limited. What with band practice, booking gigs, family life, work, shows and everything else you have going on in your life, there isn’t a lot of time left over for searching the web to find content about others to share on your bands social media sites. I wondered how I might help.

I spoke to my friend, Ryan, from Social Unidolphin about this issue. A musician himself, Ryan and I brainstormed a bit on the need in general for bands to have access to a larger fan base than just their own followers and also to have an easy way to obtain fresh content to post on social media.

What we have come up with will be a boon to all independent musicians and artists out there who are trying to be seen, heard and also be a part of a thriving music community.

We are piloting a new program that will group musicians into pods who will share each others posts.  We will monitor the program and make sure everyone carries their weight. As the program grows, the offerings will evolve and grow as well, adding new services.

For a very short time, we are accepting bands and artists into a PILOT Group. The cost for the program is just $5.00 per month – and that cost will never increase for PILOT Group members who remain in good standing. An initial 3-month commitment is required.
